Archaeological digs suggest evidence that the area now known as Dubai was originally settled by fisherman some 4,000 years ago, but it was not until the 1830's that a major settlement was established in Dubai.
Today, Dubai is a fascinating city where glistening modern high-rise buildings contrast with traditional dhows plying the important Creek which is the historical focal point of the city. In just one day, you can experience the vast expanse of the desert lying just outside of the city along with the hustle and bustle of the spice and gold souks. An abra (water taxi) ride along the creek provides a spectacular panorama of this city of merchants.
